ChatGPT can brainstorm new ideas, generate content, and improve your entire customer experience lifecycle—the list goes on. But there's a catch: ChatGPT's responses are only as good as the data it's trained on. While ChatGPT was trained on an extensive dataset, there are still gaps in its knowledge base—namely, your own data.
The good news is that you can customize it to use your own voice.
How to Use ChatGPT's Custom Instructions
Custom instructions (available on both free and paid plans) allow you to feed ChatGPT background information and specify how you'd like it to format its responses. For example, let's say you're an elementary school science teacher who uses ChatGPT to help break complex topics down into a more digestible format. You can tell ChatGPT about your role, the topic, and what grade you teach, and instruct it to always respond in a way that a 4th grader can understand.
Here's a quick overview of how to add custom instructions to ChatGPT:
- With ChatGPT open, click your profile.
- Click Customize ChatGPT or Settings -> Personalization
- Enter your instructions for what you want ChatGPT to know and how you want it to respond. (See example below)
- If it's not already selected, click the toggle next to Enable for new chats.
- Click Save.

Pros and Cons of Using Custom Instructions
Pros:
- Personalization: Custom instructions allow ChatGPT to understand your specific context and needs, leading to more relevant and accurate responses.
- Flexibility: You can tailor the chatbot to different roles, projects, and challenges, making it versatile for various use cases.
- Efficiency: Saves time by reducing the need to repeatedly provide context in each interaction.
- Enhanced User Experience: Provides a more consistent and coherent interaction, improving overall user satisfaction.
Cons:
- Limited Scope: Custom instructions may not cover every nuance or specific detail, leading to occasional inaccuracies or misunderstandings.
- Manual Updates: Requires periodic updates to ensure the information remains current and relevant.
- Dependency: Over-reliance on custom instructions might limit the chatbot’s ability to adapt to new, unanticipated scenarios without manual intervention.
- Complex Setup: For users unfamiliar with setting up custom instructions, the initial process may seem daunting or time-consuming.
